GSM, defined
GSM stands for grams per square meter: the weight of one square meter of a blanket's fabric. It measures how much fiber is actually packed into the material, which is why it predicts warmth, drape, and durability better than any adjective on a product page. Typical custom-blanket fleece runs 200 to 300 GSM; our NubaySoft 2.0 line runs 400 to 1060 GSM.
More grams per square meter means more fiber in the fabric, which translates directly into a warmer, heavier, longer-lived blanket. Warmth comes from the pile: a denser, deeper pile traps more air against your body. Drape comes from mass: a light fabric floats and flutters, while a heavy one settles over you and stays put. Durability comes from fiber density: tightly packed fibers anchor each other, so the surface resists the pilling and shedding that undo loose, low-density fleece.
None of this requires a lab. Hand someone a 300 GSM throw and a 600 GSM one and they will rank them instantly. GSM is simply the number behind what their hands already concluded.
Typical custom-blanket fleece runs 200 to 300 GSM. That range is the industry default for promotional and fundraiser blankets because it is inexpensive to produce, and it is why so many of them feel thin in hand and lose their surface after a season of washing. When a spec sheet gives no weight at all, that range is also the safest assumption.
Around 400 GSM is where real weight and pile begin, and from 600 GSM up a blanket crosses into genuinely heavyweight, keepsake-grade territory. Below roughly 300 GSM you are in standard fleece country regardless of what the marketing says. Our line is built entirely above the fleece ceiling: it opens at 400 GSM and climbs to 1060 GSM, the heaviest blanket we make.
Each step up the ladder is a difference you can feel blind. The baseline row is the 200 to 300 GSM fleece most vendors sell; the other three are published weights from our own line.

Ask for the number directly, and treat the answer itself as data. Any blanket manufacturer knows the weight of the fabric they buy; it is a basic line item on a textile spec. A vendor who publishes GSM on the product page or answers immediately is telling you the weight helps their case.
When a vendor cannot or will not give you a GSM figure, that silence is information too. Weight is the cheapest spec in the industry to disclose, so the practical reading of a missing number is that the fabric sits in the standard 200 to 300 GSM fleece range and the vendor would rather you not do the comparison.

Weight is the spec your hands read as quality, so ask for it before anything else. A vendor who knows their fabric can answer in seconds. Once you have the number, the ladder above tells you exactly where the blanket sits: fleece territory below roughly 300, real weight from 400 up, keepsake territory from 600 up.
Ply is how many layers of fabric are bonded together, and it changes drape and opacity as much as GSM does. One layer keeps a blanket lighter and makes a crisp print canvas (our Ultra Plus works this way); two bonded layers add heft and a plush face on both sides (our D-Luxe and up). Neither is wrong, so match the ply to how the blanket will be used.
A photo cannot tell you how deep or dense the pile is, so press your hand into a physical sample. Dense microfiber pile swallows your fingertips and springs back; low-density fleece mashes flat and stays that way. This one test is the reason we run a free sample program instead of asking anyone to trust renders.
Pilling and shedding are the two failures that expose a cheap blanket, and both show up within the first several washes. Loose fleece fibers break under friction, then escape as lint or tangle into bobbles. A dense pile anchors each fiber tightly enough that the surface survives regular laundering intact.
A bargain blanket that gets retired after two seasons costs more per year than a heavier one that stays in the rotation. Some print methods cure a plastic layer onto the face of the blanket, which turns high-GSM plush into a stiff panel wherever the art sits. Photo-realistic printing should live inside the fiber so the printed areas feel identical to the rest. Ask to feel a printed sample edge to edge before you commit.

Thread count measures how many yarns are woven into a square inch of a flat fabric like bed sheets, while GSM measures the total fabric weight per square meter. For plush blankets, GSM is the meaningful spec: the pile that makes a blanket feel luxurious shows up in its weight, not in a weave count.
